Schaapkraal upgraded from conservancy tanks to sewer network

Installation of new sewer infrastructure in Schaapkraal has kicked off, marking the first major Water and Sanitation upgrade to sewer lines in this area. New pipes are currently being laid along 8th, 9th and 10th avenues, as part of this significant milestone.
With the extension of the urban area to include Schaapkraal, the City has launched two major projects to install new sewer reticulation systems in the suburb.
• 8th Avenue: 565 meters of 160mm diameter sewer pipe will be laid in the road, connecting 27 properties and seven new sewer manholes to the municipal network. Work started on Wednesday, 9 October 2024, and is expected to be completed in mid-January 2025.
• 9th and 10th avenues: Work started on 17 October 2024 to place 524 metres of 160mm diameter sewer pipes in the road, with 20 property connections and six new sewer manholes. Work is scheduled for completion in December 2024.
Previously, due to the area’s rural location, properties had no access to the City’s sewer reticulation network and would use conservancy and septic tanks, which needed to be emptied regularly. Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien visited the site in Schaapkraal to inspect the progress of the work. ‘After months of planning, sewer pipes are now being successfully laid down in Schaapkraal, which was historically a farming area where residents were dependent on conservancy or septic tanks for sanitation. Through this upgrade, for the first time, properties will now be directly connected to the municipal system benefiting from improved services,’ said Councillor Badroodien.
